Is Slovakia threatened by the situation at the Zaporozhye power plant?
Slovakia is currently in imminent danger due to the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine, where a fire broke out after the shelling of the power plant complex by Russian troops.
This was announced at Friday’s press conference by the chairwoman of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ÚJ) of the Slovak Republic, Marta Žiaková, stating that there was no such equipment for the power plants that released the radiation. According to her, the radiation situation is normal.
“Based on the available information, there was a fire in the school center, which is before entering the surrounding power plants. There was no equipment that could release the radiation. There is no immediate threat to the power plants, and therefore also to Slovakia.” said the head of UJD.
The public reassures and recommends that people do not unnecessarily search for and use potassium iodide as a precaution. “I don’t recommend you can hurt yourself,” said Ziakova. Declares that sThe radiation situation in Slovakia is stable and “nothing needs to be done” at the moment. In the case of the war in Ukraine, according to the necessary diplomatic negotiations with the Ukrainian and Russian sides and the agreement, they are on rules that would exclude nuclear facilities in Ukraine from combat targets.
UJD declares that it has real-time outputs of important and radiation and meteorological data from the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute. It also receives regularly updated reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA / IAEA). The Public Health Office of the Slovak Republic is responsible for monitoring the radiation situation, which also proposes measures.
According to Žiaková, the damage caused in the area of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant does not affect the safety of the power plants. “One unit remains in operation for reduced power, the other units are shut down or out of operation,” the Office stated.
The power plant, which is the largest of its kind in Europe and supplies electricity produced in Ukraine, was controlled by Russian soldiers. However, there is also service personnel who oversee the safe operation.
