34 new emergency housing for women

On Friday, Caritas opened 34 affordable transitional apartments for women in the city of Salzburg. The completely renovated building is located on Plainstrasse. The completion of the next 16 Caritas emergency apartments is planned for 2024 in Hallein.
Women are enormously affected by violence, said the female director of Caritas Salzburg, Andrea Schmid, at the opening on Friday. From September to December 2021 there were 247 evictions and bans on approach in the city and state of Salzburg alone.
“Commitment and help for women and caring for families and children have decades of tradition at Caritas Salzburg: family help, women’s emergency shelter and now women’s housing. We will continue to focus on this in the future,” says Schmid.
Need enormous, all apartments already taken
With the “Women’s Housing” affected women should be able to rest in a stable home and at the same time be accompanied by advice and support in an independent, orderly life. The apartments have an area of around 30 square meters each. The minimum age for women is 18 years. They can also move in with their children and must be able to support themselves independently and cover the housing costs of around 400 euros. The need is great: the apartments have all been taken, and half of the women have already moved in. There is already a waiting list.
A total of 34 transitional apartments throughout Salzburg
With the support of the housing subsidy, there are now 34 affordable and livable transitional apartments, said the responsible regional councilor Andrea Klambauer (NEOS). And Salzburg’s councilor for social affairs, Anja Hagenauer (SPÖ), explained that the new women’s housing is another piece of the puzzle “so that women are not left alone in violent contexts and to bring us a step closer to our goal of a non-violent city”.
