Teaching staff wanted for compulsory schools – salzburg.ORF.at

The shortage of teachers in Salzburg is reaching new dimensions: According to the union, the situation is dramatic and tense. The education department has advertised 48 full-time positions nationwide. An information campaign is now intended to provide motivation for the teaching profession.
The shortage of skilled workers has also arrived in the classroom: Whether it’s elementary schools, new middle schools or high schools – according to compulsory school trade unionist Anton Polivka, the shortage of teachers can be felt nationwide. Even attractive schools would not be able to make up for lost staff during the year. The Department of Education has currently advertised 48 full-time positions in Salzburg.
ÖVP Education Minister Daniela Gutschi wants as many full-time employees as possible to compensate for the shortage: “Now it is important to motivate the many teachers who are currently working part-time to increase the number of hours.”
Information campaign for high school graduates started
Compulsory school trade unionist Anton Polvika sees this critically – the pressure on the teaching staff is already too great due to permanent supplier hours. As a further step, Education Minister Gutschi wants to start an information campaign in high school classes to motivate young staff for the job: “We see again and again that there are trained teachers in subjects who simply don’t give that many hours. On the other hand, we lack German, English and mathematics teachers. Students should be advised in this direction so that they also have the prospect of employment.”
Polivka: “Extended teacher training course partly to blame”
For Polivka, the tense personnel situation is also “homemade”. In 2016, the teacher training course in Salzburg was extended: Prospective elementary school teachers study five years to obtain a master’s degree, middle school teachers six years. The reform is partly to blame, but not primarily responsible.
