Just Eat leaves Norway after a big loss
LAST MILE
Barely a year after Just Eat launched a major investment in Norway, they throw in the towel.
Europe’s largest food delivery service, Just eat takeawaylost less than expected last year, it appears in the annual report which was published on Wednesday. Turnover increased by 33 percent to 5.3 billion euros, while the result was a loss of 350 million euros last year.
Northern Europe was by far the company’s strongest brand. In Norway, on the other hand, the company has done much worse than expected.
Now Just Eat takes the consequence of that, and withdraws.
The report refers to a total loss in Norway and Portugal (which the company also leaves) of 10 million euros last year, corresponding to approximately 100 million kroner.
Just Eat will be out of Norway already on April 1, the company states.
Announced major investment
The news that Just Eat is withdrawing comes as a surprise. Last spring, the company announced a new major investment in this country. The company had employed more than 120 drivers and tripled its sales force to grow in Norway.
At the same time, Just Eat communicated a “formidable growth” in Norway in recent years. During the pandemic in 2020, for example, the number of takeaway orders increased by more than 30 percent, and the ambitions were just as high for last year.
The company states that they had over 125,000 customers last year, and arranged food orders for NOK 250 million in Norway in 2020.
The major effort in Norway was a result of the merger between Just Eat and Takeaway.com, which took place in May 2020.
– When it comes to digitalisation of the restaurant industry, Norway is still a long way behind Swedes and Danes. Instead, Norwegians doubt the phone as an ordering channel, as CEO Carsten Boldt in a press release last year.
