Security software vendors whose products withstood the cyber threats of 2021 were recognized for their achievements by AV-Comparatives. There was no physical awards ceremony this year due to coronavirus restrictions. Nonetheless, a number of different vendors have been recognized for their security products.
As in previous years, there were important awards for the best Windows security products in the Consumer Main Test Series. Consumer security products are subjected to a series of rigorous tests covering various protection scenarios, false alarms and system performance impacts.
The Product of the Year award for the best overall results went to McAfee, showing that the product has improved in recent years. Avast, AVG, and Bitdefender also achieved excellent results in this year’s tests, earning Outstanding Product awards. Kaspersky was also recognized for its excellent results, receiving the Top-Rated Product award.
As in the previous year, the measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus had a major impact on people’s lives and work in 2021. Across the world, millions of people continue to work from home. This means organizations need to protect not only their own devices, but their employees’ home computers as well. Cybercriminals increasingly used Covid-19 scams to distribute malware, and attacks on corporate and targeted government networks also continued.
Products tested by AV-Comparatives in 2021 included: security programs for Windows consumer devices, macOS and Android; Enterprise EPP (Endpoint Protection) and EPR (Endpoint Prevention and Response) products; Anti-phishing and child protection products. Overall, AV-Comparatives ran more tests than ever to keep up with cybercriminals.
AV-Comparatives’ testing methods are designed to conduct rigorous testing that replicates real-world scenarios. Certification by the Austrian test laboratory is a guarantee of an effective and confirmed product.
Both the main consumer and enterprise test suites consist of a number of different individual tests that combine to provide a comprehensive assessment of the products’ performance. These were: Real-World Protection Test (protection against malware from the Internet); Malware Protection Test (protection against malware in the local network or on external devices); Advanced Threat Protection Test (protection against targeted attacks); Performance Test (impact on system speed); False positives test (number of false alarms).
