Ukraine: Private help is also starting
politics
Due to the war in Ukraine, the willingness of the population to help is increasing. Classic aid organizations such as the Red Cross and Caritas use their international networks to be able to help quickly. Private initiatives cannot do this quickly enough. They organize their own offers.
According to Caritas, it has been active in Ukraine for 30 years. She has more than a thousand employees there. There are currently 2.9 million people in need of humanitarian aid. View of closed banks, long queues in front of supermarkets and gas stations, the situation is becoming increasingly precarious.
Private theater association collects donations in kind
Since the beginning of the invasion by Putin’s military, Caritas has been able to help around 800,000 people, thanks to donations from Austria. Now the whole network will be ramped up – including accommodation for refugees in Austria, says Johannes Dines, director of Salzburg Caritas.
The Theater Ecce in Salzburg is collecting relief supplies such as bandages, medicines, hygiene items and non-perishable food until Wednesday, in order to then bring them to the Ukraine. The background to the initiative is a long-standing relationship with a Ukrainian theater. An actor from Ukraine who is part of the ensemble organizes the project.
The campaign is a one-off emergency aid until the classic aid organizations have fully ramped up their networks, says Reinhold Tritscher, chairman of the theater association. Similar actions are also organized by the Polish school in Salzburg and the Ukrainian community.
