Prime Minister Jansa warns of the domino effect if Ukraine falls
LJUBLJANA – In the event of the fall of Ukraine, Prime Minister Janez Janša pointed out the domino effect and emphasized in an interview with three media that the country’s fate is crucial not only for Europe but for the world as a whole. He said they would be next if Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia fall, and it will probably be the turn of the Baltic states and “things are cooking” in the Western Balkans. Even Taiwan could be affected, as Beijing and Moscow coordinated some moves. He said sanctions against Russia would harm Europe, but would ultimately help it divert from Russian energy.
Slovenia is ready to accept up to 200,000 Ukrainian refugees
BRUSSELS, Belgium – Slovenia has the capacity to receive between 180,000 and 200,000 refugees from Ukraine, Interior Minister Aleš Hojs said after an informal meeting of EU interior ministers. Hojs pointed out that the figure was based on the experience of the Yugoslav wars in the early 1990s, when Slovenia hosted more than 300,000 refugees from the Yugoslav republics. Hojs said that Slovenia would “take care of them to the best of its ability”, as they come from a nearby neighborhood.
Slovenia revoked the credentials of Russian honorary consuls
LJUBLJANA – Foreign Minister Anže Logar signed orders to revoke the powers of all Russian honorary consuls in Slovenia. “Russia no longer has honorary consuls in Slovenia,” he said on Twitter. The move came a day after Logar called on all Russian honorary consuls in Slovenia – five on the ministry’s website – to resign.
Russia is closing its airspace to Slovenia, the Baltic states
MOSCOW, Russia – Russia has closed its airspace to Slovenian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian planes in retaliation after those countries banned Russian planes from entering its airspace due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “Due to the unfriendly moves of the aviation authorities of Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Estonia, restrictions will be imposed on airlines of these countries and / or airlines registered there,” the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency said on Saturday.
GZS withdraws appeal against Russia’s ban on SWIFT
LJUBLJANA – The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GZS) has withdrawn from calling on the government not to support Slovenia’s exclusion from the international payment system SWIFT. “We accept all sanctions that the EU will adopt due to the aggression against Ukraine,” GZS Director General Ales Cantarutti said in a written statement on Saturday, before EU members agreed to ban some Russian banks from SWIFT.
Sports clubs have called for a boycott of events in Russia and Belarus
LJUBLJANA – The Olympic Committee of Slovenia called on all sports federations to refrain from competing in Russia and Belarus. Although sport should be above politics, “we simply cannot and should not look the other way” when Russia attacks Ukraine. “It is an incomprehensible act that causes the suffering of innocent people.” The Volleyball Federation has already announced that it will not send the national team to the World Cup in August if Russia remains the host.
The lowest two-month 901 case was confirmed on Saturday
LJUBLJANA – Slovenia confirmed 901 new cases of coronavirus infection on Saturday, the lowest daily figure since 1 January, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ). The main figure, however, comes from a much smaller number of tests, as free mass testing was reduced when restrictions were eased last weekend. Due to Covid-19, a total of 391 patients were hospitalized this morning, 27 less than yesterday, of which 94 needed intensive care, one more than yesterday.
Slovenian Križnar won in Hinzenbach
HINZENBACH, Austria – Double Olympic medalist Nika Križnar won the Ski Jumping World Cup in Hinzenbach and defeated Austria’s Marito Kramer by 20 points with the longest jumps in both series. Križnar, who took second place yesterday, was in the lead after the first series and with a 92.5-meter jump in the final series consolidated her third victory of the season, which is the longest jump of the day.
