The Belgian community in Athens participated in Ymittos’ food
The Belgian embassy in Athens joined hands with the Belgian community to help restore the Ymittos forest in the Argyroupoli area, which was destroyed by the 2015 fires.
The Belgian embassy donated 500 trees planted yesterday by more than 100 volunteers, including embassy staff and the Belgian community living in Greece and Cyprus.
The event was attended by Foivos Theodorou, Director General of Coordination of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crete and Civil Protection, as well as the Mayor of Elliniko-Argyroupolis, Giannis Konstantatos and the Deputy Mayor of Environment and Civil Protection.
“The idea came after the tragic fires of last summer,” said Belgian Ambassador to Greece Françoise Gustin. “The associations of Belgian citizens in Greece have expressed their willingness to contribute to the rebirth of a forest and I am really glad that we managed to do it today with so many volunteers. It is a sincere example of solidarity with all Greek citizens who suffered from the fires that hit Greece last summer and in previous years. “It is also an expression of respect for the hard work of firefighters and all other government agencies involved in providing assistance to citizens.”
The event was organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Elliniko-Argyroupolis.
The mayor of Elliniko, Argyroupolis, Giannis Konstantatos, wrote on social media: “One more does not feed Ymittos! I wholeheartedly thank the dozens of parents who with their children participated today in another meal on our Hymettus. Also the Belgian Embassy with its staff and the ambassador herself for her moving participation. Hymettus belongs to everyone and he needs us all so that he is safe, clean and green “.
