Lavrov expected in Geneva: UN Human Rights Council meets
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has announced his participation. He is on Tuesday’s speaker list. Ukraine has requested an urgent debate. The debate can take place at the earliest in the second half of the week, after the speeches of the more than 140 announced heads of government and ministers. About half of them wanted to be there in person.
In the UN Human Rights Council, 47 countries, each elected for three years by the UN General Assembly, deal with the human rights situation around the world. Currently, these include Russia and the other four permanent members of the Security Council, as well as Ukraine and Germany.
While the permanent members of the UN Security Council can prevent resolutions, there is no veto in the UN Human Rights Council. However, the Council can only express opinions and make recommendations.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken wanted to address the council via video message on Tuesday. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is scheduled for a video message on Wednesday.
