Researcher: Norway must expect cyber attacks on oil and gas plants
Godzimirski, an expert on energy resources in Russia’s strategy, says that the class struggle in Russia can use Europe’s dependence on Russian gas as a means of pressure after the Western sanctions that have been introduced.
– Control over energy is an important part of Russia’s strategic strategy. This summer, it will be necessary to replenish gas reserves to meet next winter. The strategists in the Kremlin know that, says Godzimirski.
Russia is the largest gas exporter to Europe with a share of around 30 percent. Then follows Norway with 23 percent. If Russia cuts supply, Norwegian gas will become more important – and an attractive target for cyber attacks, the researcher believes.
– Norway must expect cyber attacks on oil and gas infrastructure, says Godzimirski. He says it has been documented that cyber attacks are one of several tools the Russian authorities use to advance their interests in energy issues when diplomacy fails.
Military threats and sabotage are also part of the arsenal, but Godzimirski currently believes that physical actions against Norwegian facilities are unlikely.
