EU answer to questions from the Balkans, Pahor said at the Munich conference
MUNICH, Germany – In a panel discussion at a security conference in Munich, President Borut Pahor called for accelerating EU enlargement to the Western Balkans, saying the EU was the only answer to questions plaguing the region. He identified the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina as three main issues at the moment, stalling the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and blocking Bulgaria’s accession talks with Northern Macedonia. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Anže Logar said the key issue is resolving issues in the region that stem from the past.
Prime Minister Janša appears in an Italian documentary about foibe
ROME, Italy – Prime Minister Janez Jansa and Cardinal Franc Rode appeared as witnesses in a documentary on the post-World War II fast-track executions, which aired on Rai 2, Italy’s second public broadcaster, on Saturday night. The documentary entitled Foibe ed esodi, i giorni dell’Odio (Foibe in Exodus, Days of Hate) was shot by journalist Andrea Romoli. Janko Petrovec, a Roman correspondent for RTV Slovenia, who watched the film, described it as “an Italian view of the history of 20th century dictatorships in the northern Adriatic”.
Daily number of coronaviruses in Slovenia at the lowest level in seven weeks
LJUBLJANA – A total of 2,267 new cases of coronavirus infection were confirmed in Slovenia on Saturday, which is the lowest daily number in the wave of infections caused by Omicron. The number is the lowest since January 2. That’s 40% below Friday’s count and 47% lower than the figure reported a week ago. The number of patients in hospitals increased slightly, typical of the weekend, and another 19 patients died with a confirmed infection, government figures show. Most of Covid’s restrictions will be lifted on Monday.
Slovenia is second in medals per capita at the Beijing Games
BEIJING, China – Slovenian athletes won seven medals at the Beijing Winter Olympics, making the country second behind Norway in medals per capita. In total, Slovenia ranks 15th in the list of Olympic medals among all countries. The Slovenian national team won two gold, three silver and two bronze medals, four of them in ski jumping, two in snowboarding and one in alpine skiing. On the last day of the games, Slovenia took 7th place in the mixed team parallel slalom, after being eliminated by Austria, which then won gold.
The high school group won the Slovenian Eurovision Song Contest
LJUBLJANA – A group of five young people from LPS or Last Pizza Slice will represent Slovenia at the 66th Eurovision Song Contest in Turin with the song Disco after winning the joint vote of the audience and judges on Saturday. LPS qualified for the finals of the national EMA competition as one of the four finalists of the EMA Fresh, a competition of young budding talents. They will perform in the first semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin on May 10.
