” Mastery ? An incredible opportunity! »
News: You went through the Mastery before becoming a rapper. It’s not an ordinary course!
Hans-Emmanuel Banim: (He laughs) I was ahead at school, but my parents didn’t want me to skip class, so that I could stay with children my age. Joining the Maîtrise allows me to learn music, while having a little less class, and therefore to “compensate” for this advance in a way. My mom loved the idea, but I wasn’t convinced. I had to leave my friends, to go to an establishment where I didn’t know anyone, it wasn’t ideal.
And finally ?
H.-EB: After a year, I took a liking to it, and I really started to invest myself in this course, which I joined in CE1 and followed until 3rd. In the end, it was an incredible opportunity, which allowed me to discover a passion for music. I was totally into it! And I experienced great moments, including an international tour with Les Arts Florissants and tenor Philippe Jaroussky, which took us to New York, London, Paris, Luxembourg…
You must have caught your eye!
H.-EB: We gave great concerts, made TV shows with Michel Drucker. I had met Julio Igliesias, of whom my mother is a big fan! In New York, we were staying at the Empire Hotel, the one we see in Gossip Girl, the fashionable series in my college. It was crazy!
“We are music lovers”
What did this experience bring you?
H.-EB: I learned the basics of music, which I still use today. It also taught me to manage my stress on stage. And from a simple human point of view, it allowed me to frequent extremely diverse and varied backgrounds, which is not nothing for a kid from the neighborhoods of Caen.
After that ?
H.-EB: Oddly, I got a bit away from the music. I had just started high school, I was still looking for myself, I was thinking about my future… But at the end of my business studies, around 22 years old, I joined with JD and Floyd the hip-hop collective 109Musiq founded by two big guys in my neighborhood, Moltess and MZE.
How was the 3Pour100 trio born?
H.-EB: At some point, with JD and Floyd, we had developed our own artistic direction, so we “took our freedom” and created 3Pour100.
How would you define your style?
H.-EB: It’s hip-hop, but quite melodic, because we are music lovers first and foremost. We tell stories, on a rap basis, but not hardcore, because we try to convey good vibes. The world is brutal enough as it is!
“A tour with Orelsan? It’s awesome ! »
When was your first contact with Orelsan?
H.-EB: It was his friend and producer, Ablaye, who spotted us when we started. He followed us from afar, then he approached and advised us. He came to see us when we were opening for KeBlack, and he offered to do the same for Orel’au Zénith in 2018. And we’ve stayed in touch ever since.
This year, a new step, since you will be doing all the first parts of his tour. This is a sacred opportunity!
H.-EB: We repeat our show as much as possible to take the stress off us! Afterwards, we are also well aware that the public comes to see Orelsan, and not us, but we will give the maximum and we hope that the spectators will escape our “good vibes”.
No apprehension from the roads with one of the biggest stars of French music?
H.-EB: No not at all. Orelsan and everyone around him are really very simple people, and we’ve been seeing each other for a long time. For the three of us who are childhood friends, it’s great to experience all of this together. This is an additional step in our project, which will allow us to gain notoriety.
