‘Bigoted, ignorant, elitist’ views on an affordable home in Malta
Malta’s recent article on the issue of affordable housing should be a necessary read for fair housing lawyers and government partners responsible for combating discrimination.
Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner at a Malta Sunrise Rotary public meeting warned the city that it is risking state intervention if it does not provide affordable housing, which, along with humanity, seems non-existent and undesirable. Her sage advice fell on bigoted, ignorant, elitist ears and minds (“Leader calls for housing options,” January 29).
Supervisor Mark Hammond, from the Saratoga County Republican ole white boys’ club, says affordable housing means “we will bring all the rubble … (Malta is) a family town. ” His awful comments devolved from there, although he continued to indicate that he was expressing a belief held by that infamous group known as the city’s unnamed residents. Yes, right.
Hammond’s view, supported by Rotary members, is that public transit expansions will help because employees can get to work in Malta without living there. Rotary members have allegedly devised ways for the CDTA to be involved for the benefit of their employers and workers. So is the Rotary Club’s “moral code” that beats its social media.
It’s not magnanimous of these hot, cloudy city “leaders” who temporarily leave strangers in their kingdom to boost the city’s businesses, spend their hard-earned money, and retire to their housing outside the city. ?
We hope that the relevant authorities will take note of this episode of shame, maintain state and federal aid, eliminate this prejudice of shame and allow everyone to live the American dream.
