Thanks to Anthony Modeste and a strong collective, 1. FC Köln dreams of Europe.
At the moment when Anthony Modeste stepped onto the sidelines after almost an hour of play, ready to come on after surviving the Covid infection, he received one or two instructions from his boss, coach Steffen Baumgart, with a shrug of the shoulders rather than attentively, half the stadium suspected what would come soon: Anthony Modeste as match winner of 1. FC Köln, again.
Modeste doesn’t really need this instruction at all, he knows where to stand and when, he knows how to shake off his opponents, he knows how to put the ball in the box. This time it was the victorious 1-0 through the legs of Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp – something like Modeste doesn’t have to learn anymore, he can just do it.
The striker from France has now scored 15 goals this season, which is 43 per cent of all FC goals, seven times he made it 1-0 for his club – if it goes wrong, then just curse it. “Things are going really well for me this season, but I also have to report to the team and the coach. It’s always important for a striker to have the coach behind you.”
1. FC Köln works as a collective against Eintracht
Steffen Baumgart accepts Modeste, takes the unconventional professional as he is – and vice versa. After Modeste’s crisis season 2020/21, the ex-Paderborn snapper grabbed the summer preparation and had a serious conversation with him. Tenor: Tony, do you want to whine or show everyone what you’ve got? Modeste chose the latter.
He continues to carry a Cologne team that consists of a few experts and yet works as a collective. The bold nature of the coach, the aggressive style of play, the increased confidence, the goalscorer Modeste – all of this even makes FC dream of the European Cup.
Baumgart credibly (still) weighs him down, lives in the moment and this view of his professionals. Even Anthony Modeste saying, ‘We have to keep to ourselves. I think everyone has fun. That’s what life is about. Kölle Alaaf.” (by Daniel Schmitt and Ingo Durstewitz)
