Del Potro is already in Switzerland to start a new treatment
Juan Martín Del Potro from Tandil, former world number three, started new medical treatment at a clinic in Switzerland yesterday with a mission to put the injury that haunts him in his right kneecap behind, albeit now without it the pressure of having to step out onto a tennis court again, as has happened on previous occasions.
In that regard, the 33-year-old tennis player and 2009 US Open winner this week began new medical treatment for his right knee at Rennbahnklinik, a specialized center in Muttenz, Switzerland, eight kilometers from Basel, birthplace of the remarkable Roger Federer.
Several athletes have been treated in this clinic, such as the Serbian Novak Djokovic when he had surgery on his right elbow in 2017, the Spanish tennis player Pablo Andújar also on his right elbow in 2017, or the Chilean footballer of the German Bayer Leverkusen Charles Arangüiz on his Achilles tendon in 2015.
In the case of Del Potro, he returned to tennis last February 8 at the Argentina Open after 965 days of inactivity and four surgeries on his right kneecap.
The 33-year-old from Tandil previously played at the Queen’s English Open in June 2019 and after four surgeries was able to return to the Argentina Open where he lost to Azul’s Federico Delbonis in the opening round.
recover his knee, the main goal
Ahead of that match, the man from Tandil, one of the best Argentine tennis players of all time, had announced that his injury-plagued retirement was imminent and that he was not planning his future as a tennis player, but wanted to “recover his knee and live like a normal person.”
The fall against Delbonis on a night of emotion at the Lawn Tennis Club in Buenos Aires, where 5,000 fans gave him a standing ovation, was perhaps his last appearance on a tennis court, in fact after the match he symbolically hung his headband on the tennis court net Centercourt Guillermo Vilas.
Del Potro, unable to move on the court nor connect his fearsome serve as he can’t propel himself with his knee, lost to Delbonis 6-1, 6-3 and said his next Presentation at the Río Open.
The affection of his fans and the support of the most important tennis players of the international scene like Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Stan Wawrinka, almost all active Argentines and some retired like the American Andy Roddick, motivated “Delpo” to try something else, although not well known is whether it allows him to play again.
