By Francesco Niccolini, freely inspired by the story of Herman Melville, with Giuliana Colzi, Andrea Costagli, Dimitri Frosali, Massimo Salvianti, Lucia Socci, directed by Emanuele Gamba, “Bartleby the scribe” is “the metaphor of a man who heroically, stubbornly shouts in a low voice the right to choice and freedom, against everything, but for everyone ”.
The plot: “It’s an ordinary day in a lawyer’s office, where time flows fluid, boring and patient, according to the rules of a blissfully bureaucratic perpetual motion, that is mechanical and senseless, when a new scribe is hired, Bartleby who copies and diligently compiles the cards his master passes him. Until a little bit of sand gets into the gear and everything freezes. Without a reason. Without a reason. One day Bartleby decides to respond to any request, from the simplest to the normal in the professional field, with a phrase that has remained in history: “I would have preferred not”. Only four words, spoken in a low voice, without violence and without meaning, but that’s enough. A gentle refusal that paralyzes work and logic: a sort of waiting in atmospheric turbulence that upsets both the office and the intimate life of the employer. From that moment Bartleby goes out: he stays inert at his desk, then stands for hours looking towards the window. He stops going out during breaks, does not drink, does not eat, he will sleep secretly in the office, worrying first, and then pitying the boss about him who can’t get a reason for that behavior. The fact is that Bartleby simply decided to deny himself. Because? When we find out, it will be too late ”.
