St. Polten. Storm depression “Ylenia” gave Lower Austria’s helpers a restless Thursday. 2,200 members of 190 fire brigades were involved in around 220 operations, said Franz Resperger from the state command. All parts of the country were affected by the strong wind. The main problem is falling trees, which caused potentially tricky situations in several regions.
A class 5047 railcar collided with a tree near Gars am Kamp station (Horn district) in the afternoon. The first bogie derailed as a result, said ÖBB spokesman Christopher Seif on request. About 30 passengers were unharmed. The train was heading towards Horn.
Rail replacement service set up
After the storm-related accident, a rail replacement service was set up on the Gars – Plank am Kampf section. The ÖBB spokesman assumes that the measure will remain in place until the close of business on Thursday. The railcar was to be put back on the track with mechanical support.
In Raabs ad Thaya (Waidhofen ad Thaya district), a tree fell on the roof of a hotel restaurant. Guests were not on site due to a temporary closure due to renovation work, the district command reported. There were no injuries. A residential building in Gastern in the same district and a garage roof in Raabs ad Thaya were also hit by trees.

Südautobahn (A2) temporarily closed
The southern autobahn (A2) in the area of the Industriezentrum NÖ-Süd junction was temporarily closed in the morning. Resperger expected the trailer of a truck to be hit by a violent gust of wind and overturned. The arriving helpers were presented with a spectacular sight, as the rear axle of the towing vehicle was practically floating in the air. The driver was unharmed. All four lanes of the Graz lane were blocked by cars and trailers. The clean-up work, in which a crane truck from the state fire brigade association was also used, takes around one and a half hours. Due to the blocking of the A2, kilometers of traffic jams formed.

There were 60 missions in the Amstetten district alone. According to fire department spokesman Philipp Gutlederer, trees fell on the Westautobahn (A1) near St. Valentin. The storm “Ylenia” also swept across the Baden area. At Schönau ad Triesting, a semitrailer was literally pushed off the roadway of the B17. According to the district fire brigade command, the vehicle was recovered using two cable winches.

20,000 oo. House temporarily without electricity
Linz. In Upper Austria, the storm with top speeds of up to 100 km/h on Thursday morning led to a series of power outages. A spokesman for Netz OÖ announced that between 15,000 and 20,000 households were temporarily without electricity across the state. According to the state fire brigade command, 262 fire departments with 4,500 men and women were called out for 700 missions from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fallen trees or broken branches on overhead lines had led to the power outages. Fire brigades had to free people from stuck elevators again and again. In Sierning (Steyr-Land district), a small truck was hit by a gust of wind and thrown onto the roof. The injured driver was extricated from the trapped vehicle. In Ohlsdorf (Gmunden district), a truck landed in a ditch, the state fire brigade command gave an interim result.
Mainly, however, the emergency services were busy all Thursday making roads blocked by fallen branches or fallen trees passable again. In the Mühlviertel, train services between Rottenegg and Aigen-Schlägl were suspended due to the weather. Due to storm damage, no train ran between Summerau and Freistadt at noon. Train journeys were also not possible between Wels and Grünau. Rail replacement services have been set up on all routes. The lift operation in Hinterstoder and on the Wurzeralm was only possible to a limited extent.
Damage mainly in northern Salzburg
Salzburg. The storm “Ylenia” also caused some damage in the state of Salzburg on Thursday and caused numerous fire brigade deployments. The Flachgau, the city of Salzburg and the Tennengau were particularly affected. 13 fire departments have been deployed since 7:00 a.m., as state fire service commander Günter Trinker explains in the early afternoon when asked by APA. Above all, fallen trees had to be thrown.
Individual, violent gusts of wind threatened to topple trees again and again. The emergency services were therefore called upon to take precautionary measures. In the morning, the state warning center recorded even fewer alarms, in the afternoon the fire brigades had more to do. “We currently have six missions,” said Trinker shortly before 2 p.m.
Around noon, a gust of wind knocked down a tree in Hellbrunn Palace Park in the city of Salzburg. As a precaution, the city closed the palace park, Hellbrunner Allee, all city cemeteries and the city mountains to visitors. When the situation calms down again, the lock will be lifted, it said.
Storm peaks of around 100 km/h were expected in the state of Salzburg on Thursday. At 2 p.m., wind speeds of 121 km/h were measured on Sonnblick in Pinzgau at 3,114 meters above sea level, 118 km/h on Kolomansberg in Flachgau and 98 km/h on Loferer Alm in Pinzgau.
