Portugal networks millions of liters of water in distribution
INDAQUA leak control and illicit consumption for water waste

The waste of water, of many millions of liters per year, requires maintenance of networks and control of illicit consumption, solutions that are less expensive than the construction of dams or desalination, defends INDAQUA.
The control of losses already in the distribution network “is absolutely unavoidable in the future of water and there are management models that allow it without large investments”, Pedro Perdigão, executive president (CEO) of the INDAQUA group, told Lusa. concession in Fafe, Matosinhos, Santa Maria da Feira, Oliveira de Azeméis, Santo Tirso, Trofa and Vila do Conde.

Among the examples mentioned are “optimal technology, close to networks and illicit consumption, maintenance of less expensive consumption than the construction of reservoirs or desalination, which are usually and wrongly pointed out as solutions for the future.”
Portugal, according to a 2020 report by the Regulatory Authority for Waste Water Services (ERSAR), millions of liters of water in its distribution networks, or the equivalent of nine Olympic swimming pools per hour.

In total, 2019, according to 188 million liters of water in the supply networks, according to the annual report on water and waste services in Portugal (RASARP 020), by ERSAR for 2020.
This entity needs to invest in infrastructure and fight against “the species of water in the network and avoiding unbilled water are challenges that must be faced by the entire environment of the entities that manage the sector”.
In a drought in height and the effects that can cause changes in climate change in the order of water resources, depending on the availability of water resources, depending on the availability of climatic resources that alter the regime of changes and may increase the occurrence of hydrological extremes, such as floods and severe droughts, in several regions of the planet and Portugal is no exception”, says ERSAR.
This scenario is one of the current challenges pointed out by the sector, which “continues to record species of species in the networks (water not the national average) of 30%, in “some municipalities up to 80%”, according to Pedro Perdigão, from INDAQUA.

In 2020, the average value of safe water, water water, in mainland Portugal recorded a value of 98.85%, according to the report by ERSAR.
However, in order to maintain this level, taking into account the increase in the amount of water available, “it actually contributes to lower quality”, as stated by Afonso do Ó, a water specialist at Associação Natureza Portugal (ANP), a non-governmental organization (NGO), “We have to make an effort”, concludes Filipe Duarte Santos, an additional member of the National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development (CNADS).
