Olympic women’s hockey: Canada beats Sweden 11-0
BEIJING – Brianne Jenner and Sarah Fillier each scored a hat-trick to lead Canada to a 11-0 quarter-final victory over Sweden in the Olympic women’s hockey tournament on Friday.
Jenner and Fillier each have tournament-leading eight goals each.
The United States beat the Czech Republic 4-1 in another quarterfinal.
Both winners waited for the result of Saturday’s quarterfinals with Russia against Switzerland, and Finland against Japan, to find out their semi-final opponents on Monday.
The Gold Game is on February 17 in Beijing.
Jamie Lee Rattray, Erin Ambrose, Natalie Spooner, Blayre Turnbull and Emily Clark also scored in Canada’s quarterfinal victory. Sarah Nurse and Marie-Philip Poulin contributed with four assists each.
Canada’s Emerance Maschmeyer sent an 11-point suspension in its second start in Beijing.
Swedish counterpart Emma Söderberg stopped 30 of 39 shots for two periods before giving way to Ida Boman and her 15 saves.
Filler and Jenner are both a goal from the tournament record of nine held together by Canada’s Meghan Agosta and Swiss Stephanie Marty (2010).
Canada attacked the Swedes in waves and rode relentlessly in the offensive zone. Three acrobatic saves from Söderberg kept Canada in the lead with one goal until late in the opening period when the locks opened.
Canada made the most of Sweden’s many tripping penalties with a 4-for-7 powerplay. The line of Poulin, Jenner and the nurse was outstanding and generated several goal chances under the hash brands.
Jenner collected her second hat trick in the tournament when she first came in an opening win with 12-1 over Switzerland.
The Canadian was still minus forward Melodie Daoust, who has not played since her injury in the second period of the match.
Canada met Sweden in Olympic women’s hockey for the first time since 2010, when the hosts beat the Swedes 13-1 in Vancouver.
Sweden upset the USA in the Olympic semi-finals in 2006 on the way to a silver medal, but the team was surrounded by chaos three years ago.
After the Swedes finished ninth and were relegated for the first time in the women’s world championships, Sweden’s players refused to participate in a national team camp and a tournament to start the following season to protest against their financial compensation and working conditions.
The Swedish Hockey Association then canceled the Four Nations Cup 2019 with Canada, Finland and the USA in Luleå. The association and the players agreed later that year.
Sweden’s women beat France in a qualifying tournament in November 2021 to be in the 10-country field in Beijing.
