Research: Most Greeks want teleworking even after the pandemic
The majority of Greeks are in favor of teleworking on the condition that the nature of the profession allows it, while they believe that it is something that needs to be co-decided between employees and employers, so that the solution of teleworking is of mutual benefit. Also, the best option for those who have already tried the teleworking solution, is to continue on a “mixed basis” after the end of the pandemic.
This emerges from a new nationwide survey by Focus Bari | YouGov on a sample of 1,000 people during the period 15-22 January 2022. Two out of five Greek employees (39%) say that two have worked or are still working in recent years due to a pandemic. 7% work continuously with telework from March 2020 until today, 19% only in the “lockdown” periods, 13% in the “lockdown” and some additional days, while 61% have never worked teleworking.
Women (45%) have higher rates of teleworking than men (34%), residents of Attica (46%) compared to those of Thessaloniki (39%) and the region (34%), as well as the elderly groups 25-34 years (48%) and 35-44 years (43%) versus 38% at 45-54 years, 37% over 55 years and 33% under 25 years.
23% say “absolutely in favor” of telework, 47% “rather in favor”, 23% “probably against” and only 7% “absolutely against”. The highest acceptance rates for teleworking are between the ages of 25-34 (51%) and those who have already tried teleworking (48%).
According to the survey answers, teleworking has several advantages for both employees (less travel time 73%, better work time organization 43%, more time with family 36% and more quietness – less stress 35%), and for businesses (lower rents and operating costs 67%, smaller office space 64% and higher employee efficiency 31%).
However, it also seems to have some disadvantages, with the main one for the employees the alienation-lack of socialization (73%), because the employers do not have the inability to build a strong internal climate of cooperation between the colleagues (71%).
For 39% of Greek employees who work or have worked remotely in the last two years, after the end of the pandemic, it was best to work some days remotely and some of the offices (57%), 29% want return to offices as before the pandemic, while 14% wish to continue 100% teleworking.
