Marelli Electric Powertrain Strasbourg, the joint venture between MARELLI and PUNCH Motive International created in May 2021, today announced the successful award of its first major contract with a major global OEM for the production of electric axles.
The awarded electric axle will be developed, tested and manufactured by Marelli Electric Powertrain Strasbourg and the start of production is scheduled for 2024.
Combining the proven expertise of both partners, the JV company – majority owned by Marelli – develops and assembles integrated electric axle systems optimized for BEVs or plug-in hybrid cars, for Europe and the Americas. The acquisition of this first order since the JV became operational is recognition in the market for its advanced technological capabilities.
The electric axle system will be compatible with the most stringent functional safety requirements, such as ASIL-D (Automotive Safety Integrity Level D). It will be one of the most compact, efficient and high-performance solutions on the market. Another unique feature is the ability to deliver optimal handling to BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles), thanks to features such as Active Torque Vectoring, which brings agility to the ride.
Hannes Prenn, President of Marelli’s Vehicle Electrification Division noted, “This joint venture was created to fill a gap in the electric vehicle portfolio of Marelli’s vehicle electrification division. Obtaining such a large award so soon after its creation perfectly demonstrates the reason for the creation of the company. The focus on electric axles for complete electrification systems is a key part of Marelli’s vehicle electrification strategy. Coupled with our recognized experience in the field of electric powertrain and thermal management, it frames a global approach that allows efficient control of the flow of energy in the vehicles of today and tomorrow.”
As a key system for electric vehicles, the e-axle is a central technology in Marelli’s e-mobility growth strategy. With the accelerated transition to e-mobility, Marelli’s goal is to expand its unique integrated offering as a supplier of complete systems for vehicle electrification, including electric motors, inverters and software, battery management solutions.
