Unpredictable costs in construction projects – salzburg.ORF.at

The city of Salzburg invested around 50 million euros this year. The majority of this goes into renovation projects. There are also a number of flagship projects worth millions. The main problem with building is still the extremely unpredictable construction costs.
With a total cost of four million euros, the design of the outdoor space at the North Sports Center is currently one of the most expensive construction sites in the state capital. Completion is scheduled for the end of May. The second major project of this year is the conversion of the recycling center in Salzburg-Maxglan. The city spends between four and a half and five million euros on this. Exactly how much is still unclear, because the fluctuation range for the costs is plus/minus 25 percent.
The order books of the construction companies are apparently full
“It’s extremely variable. There are projects where we are within the limits, with others we are clearly above it. The construction price index has risen by more than ten percent on average. We clearly notice that few offers came in last year. This means that the companies currently have a very good capacity utilization. We builders hope that things will get better again. But it is questionable how long that will take,” says Alexander Wardrobe, Building Director of the City of Salzburg.
A total of 60 construction projects are planned for 2022
This is also reflected in civil engineering. Sewer construction sites will also be the order of the day in the state capital today. In the south of Itzling, for example, around a kilometer of sewer lines are to be renewed. “We are trying to coordinate with the construction sites of Salzburg AG, which has all the supply lines – from water to district heating to electricity and telecommunications,” says City Councilor Martina Berthold (citizens’ list). In addition to the canals, renovation projects in the school and senior citizen area are among the main projects of the municipal building department. A total of a good 60 individual projects are on the construction plan this year.
