Guided tour of the Church of NS del Carmine and Sant’Agnese
Genoa – Saturday 12 February 2022, at 16, Genoa Cultura Aps organizes the guided tour of the Church of NS del Carmine and Sant’Agnese. The Carmine complex was built in 1262 by some Carmelite friars who had taken refuge in the city after having been part of the entourage of the King of France eliminated by the Tartars. In the fourteenth century the convent (destroyed in 1870) and the cloister were built, of which some traces remain. Inside, the predominant style is Gothic, with large pointed arches supported by black and white columns, typical of the Ligurian tradition. The square-shaped apseproper to the mendicant orders is the only Genoese example.
Genoa – During long restoration works they were discovered in 2009 very valuable frescoes in excellent condition dating back to 1200, precisely 9 medallions depicting Carmelite saints, made by Manfredino da Pistoia, illustrious pupil of Cimabue. Inside, seventeenth-century paintings depicting St. Louis bringing the Carmelite friars by Giovanni Carlone to safety on the ships, and other frescoes by Gioacchino Assereto, Giovanni Battista Paggi and Bernardo Castello. A participation fee is expected; reservation compulsory: e-mail Genova Cultura or 010 3014333 – 392 1152682.
