Tactics
Gerhardsson has emphasized attacking play and quick starts and has a squad with several players who can be flexible with which roles they play. Experienced goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl usually plays behind a four-player defense in a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation, while Caroline Seger, history’s most attracted European, plays an important role in the central midfield, as does Fridolina. Rolfö and Sofia Jakobsson down on the wings.
Pedigree
Winner of the very first UEFA women’s tournament in 1984, Sweden has reached the final in several major competitions since then but has not yet added a second title. After losing to Germany in the World Cup finals for women in 2001 and 2003 on golden goals, Sweden had something of a reputation to underperform given the talent they had at their disposal, especially surprising losses against Norway in the EURO semifinals in 2005 and a quarter four years later. But it only showed the high standard they were held to and in recent years they have become tournament specialists – especially their unexpected and cruel race for Olympic silver in 2016, earned World Cup bronze in 2019 and then another Olympic silver in 2021, when they performed brilliantly all the time just to miss penalties behind Canada.
