Jesuit College Innsbruck presents catalog of demands
The Jesuit College Innsbruck expects concrete church renewals through the worldwide synodal process of the Catholic Church. This emerges from a statement published by the college over the weekend. In the paper, which was signed by Rector P. Christian Marte, by P. Bernhard Heindl (Rector of the Jesuit Church), P. Andreas Schermann (Collegium Canisianum) and by the head of the future workshop, P. Helmut Schumacher, the development of new Offices and forms of consecration, the promotion of women in the highest management positions and the limitation of the term of office for bishops.
Further demands include the development of quality standards in pastoral care, which, for example, provides for a time limit on priestly powers for confession, sermons, spiritual accompaniment and the accompaniment of retreats. In the area of training, there is also a need for targeted training for people in management positions, with a focus on employee management, among other things. Digital communication should then also be expanded and the church contribution “rethought” and expanded in the direction of “other forms of church membership”.
Marte is convinced that many things in German-speaking dioceses and orders could be renewed by the local churches themselves, on their own responsibility and within the framework of canon law. “Above all, the question of quality in pastoral care is part of it.” The synodal process is about cultural development. “This is more than just organizational change”. Cultural development takes time, good listening and attention to reality. Those who only want to preserve the status quo become “immobile”. For such a cultural development, the statements also recommend the synodal process to have a spiritual conversation.
The Vatican has started a worldwide synodal process in preparation for the synod of bishops planned for 2023 on the subject of “synodality”: In stages, from the dioceses to the continents to the synod of bishops themselves, the faithful and their bishops are to discuss what is important for the church. With the statement of the Jesuit College Innsbruck one wants to make a contribution to this process. (statement in the wording: www.jesuiten.org/news/jesuitenkolleg-innsbruck-erwartt-erneuungen)
