Ex-Rector of the Mozarteum: Imprisoned
“He went into detention independently,” said the head of the Salzburg prison, Dietmar Knebel, on Monday morning when asked by APA. The musicologist and pianist arrived at the Salzburg prison in Puch (Tennengau) a week late. He had not complied with the regional court’s request to enter prison by February 1, 2022.
Personal matters settled
According to a court spokesman, he has meanwhile applied for his detention to begin on February 7 because he still has personal matters to sort out. His Salzburg lawyer, Kurt Jelinek, emphasized last week that the man would of course begin his arrest on Monday, which he did.
It is unclear whether detention will be served in a prison
It has not yet been clarified whether the former head of the music university is serving his sentence exclusively in the Salzburg prison. In the case of prison sentences of more than 18 months, the Ministry of Justice must decide where in Austria the person concerned has to serve the sentence, the prison director explained.
A classification should be carried out within the first six weeks of imprisonment. The convicted person can express his wishes, and a treatment method will also be translated if this is necessary for health reasons. After the Salzburg prison has issued a statement, it is up to the ministry to make a decision.
employment in prison
First of all, the prisoner has to complete an entrance examination in the Salzburg prison. According to Knebel, his corona status will be checked. Even if the test is negative, the musician will be kept in the quarantine area of the institution for five days.
If no Covid-19 symptoms have occurred, he will then move into a cell in the prison wing, which can accommodate a maximum of two people. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the head of the prison will have another conversation with the convict, in which he can express his concerns and whether he can pursue the job in prison.
Dismissed with a stay of execution of the sentence
With his request to the Federal President to postpone the execution of the sentence “by way of mercy”, the former head of the music university, who is striving for a resumption of the criminal proceedings, was recently rebuffed. The judgment against him was confirmed by the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) in October 2019 and has therefore become final.
The attacks on the woman happened a few years ago in Munich. The accused followed the Munich Music Academy from 2003 to 2014, after which he was rector of the Mozarteum in Salzburg until June 2016. In addition to German, he also has Austrian citizenship.
