Salzburg dies after an avalanche in Bavaria – Salzburg
The rescue measures came too late – a 61-year-old from Salzburg had an accident in Bavaria after an avalanche had broken loose.
The avalanche danger is currently more acute in the Alps than it has been for a long time. After the state of Tyrol had already warned against only being on marked slopes, a new case of a fatality has now become known.
Caught in an avalanche while ski touring
On Saturday afternoon, a 61-year-old from Salzburg was hit by an avalanche while ski touring near Ramsau near Berchtesgaden and buried under the snow masses. The incident happened during the ascent of the man and his 41-year-old colleague via the Sittersbachtal to the 2,468 meter high Steintalhörndl.
While the 61-year-old died, his partner was only partially caught in the snow masses and could be flown to the hospital with unknown dimensions. Just below the summit, a slab of snow about 400 meters wide and 900 meters long broke loose and cracks with both. Another tourer, who was already at the summit during the avalanche, was able to locate the 41-year-old and then the 61-year-old – but resuscitation measures were unsuccessful for the latter.
Also for the coming week it is expected that the avalanche danger will continue to increase. Especially in Tyrol and in the Bavarian border area, masses of fresh snow ensure that slabs of snow come loose again and again. The corresponding warning level will probably be raised from four to five.
