China violates human rights of Finnish hockey player by quarantining him after a coronavirus-positive test, according to team coach Jukka Jalonen.
Marko Anttila has been asymptomatic since he made a positive test result on January 18, and later recorded a test result that allowed him to enter the Beijing Olympics in China. In China, however, he again passed the positive test and was sent to a quarantine hotel where he has remained.
“This is a violation of human rights,” Lions coach Jukka Jalonen said at a news conference on Sunday. “A perfectly healthy top athlete cannot compete in the Olympics. There are obviously more lottery millionaires in Finland than Olympic athletes, so not every boy or girl can dance.”
Finland will start its Olympic campaign against Slovakia on 10 February. According to Jalonen, Anttila is doing as well as can be expected given the circumstances.
“I talked to him yesterday,” Jalonen said. “Marko is a mentally strong guy. He’s not depressed, but he’s pretty depressed. A couple of times a day he gets a cold and tasteless spaghetti bolognese.”
In order to escape quarantine, Anttila must submit samples in accordance with the Chinese authorities’ instructions for three consecutive days.
If Anttila records a CT value of more than 35 for three consecutive days, he or she may leave the quarantine. A CT score indicates how much virus a person has, and if the value is 35 or more, the risk of passing on the infection is considered very low.
The figure is based on the number of “amplification cycles” required by the PCR test to identify coronavirus infection. The more episodes needed, the less Covidia will occur.
Team doctor Maarit Valtonen said that Anttila ‘s results are a borderline case, and he has discussed with colleagues in other countries how the situation could be resolved to get Anttila and others in his situation out of isolation.
“The so – called long tail can show up in tests for a long time [after infection] and with high CT values, someone in the lab could declare it positive or completely negative, ”Valtonen said on January 24th.
Anttila plays for Norilsk Nickel’s Helsinki-owned Continental Hockey League in Helsinki, which includes teams from Belarus, China, Kazakhstan, Finland and Latvia.
