Norwegian citizen died in avalanche in Austria – NRK Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country
– The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware that a Norwegian citizen has died in a landslide in Austria. It must have happened in the ski town of Albona in Klösterle, says Tuva Bogsnes, press officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
She says that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no more information about the landslide.
– But what is important is that we have contact with relatives and offer consular assistance in accordance with rapid practice in connection with deaths abroad, she says and explains that, for example, it can be help to transport the deceased back to Norway.
Out of consideration for the duty of confidentiality, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not comment on the gender or age of the person who died. They also do not want to say anything about where the deceased is from.
Tried life saving help
NRK has ours in contact with the local police. The police confirm in ei press release that the person who died was 43 years old.
The landslide took place in the Knödelkopf mountain, which is close to Albona, on Friday afternoon.
According to the police, they were a group on fire that climbed a steep slope of around 40 degrees.
The Norwegian was taken by the avalanche. According to the police, the Norwegian was wearing an avalanche balloon that was triggered.
Following the police, the person was quickly dug out of the avalanche by others in the tour. Together with rescue workers who came by helicopter, they tried to provide life-saving first aid.
Austrian authorities warn that the risk of landslides in the area is calculated at danger level three out of five.
More avalanches in Austria
There have been several landslides in Austria in recent days.
On Friday, five people died, among them four Swedes in an avalanche in Spiss in the Austrian state of Tyrol.
A Swedish citizen was transported to a hospital in Switzerland. It was this person who reported the avalanche.
The fifth deceased is to be an Austrian ski guide.
Another landslide, at Sölden a little further east in the region, also took with it five skiers. These came out alive.
