Norway and Sweden won on Saturday morning
There were only two matches in Saturday morning’s seventh Mixed Doubles round-robin session in Ice Cube. Norway beat Australia 10-4 in just six finals, while Sweden went out as a 6-1 winner over Switzerland, also in six finals.
Norway had the strongest possible start against Australia and scored four points in the first end.
The Scandinavians followed it up with a steal of two in the other for a 6-0 lead, when Australia’s Tahli Gill got his angles wrong on a selection attempt.
Australia had a two-point draw in the third end that fell short, leaving them to score just one point.
In the fifth, Gill played a well-judged raise double withdrawal to make three and reduce Norway’s lead to 7-4.
With the last stone in the sixth end, Norwegian Kristin Skaslien knocked out an Australian stone to score three points and give her team a 10-4 lead.
Australia decided that the deficit was now too large and admitted.
This was a second victory for Norway, and kept them in touch with the playoffs, while Australia is still without a win.
Afterwards, Norway’s Magnus Nedregotten said, “We managed to reach our normal level at many of the ends, and it’s a huge relief. It’s not just about the win, it’s about the feeling and confidence we go out with in the coming matches. The excitement was right there. We are convinced that we can now do what we can. “
In the second match of this session, Sweden opened with two points, while a tap-out by Jenny Perret gave Switzerland one point at one in the second end.
Sweden then made one in the third end to restore their two-point lead, 3-1.
In the fourth end, Switzerland gave up a steal of one when Perret’s several elimination attempts left a Swedish stone closest to the button.
After the break, Perret missed a hit attempt in the fifth end, which gave Sweden another one-point theft and a 5-1 lead.
In the sixth end, a third steal in a row gave Sweden another single point – for 6-1.
Switzerland released during the seventh finish.
This result restored Sweden to a clear second place in the ranking behind leading Italy while Switzerland still has only one victory and sits in ninth place.
After this win, Sweden’s Oskar Eriksson said: “It was a very good match for us, probably our best match. We put pressure on them from the beginning. We just made more shots at each end than we did yesterday, so it’s a big step forward for us. It is a decent result and puts us in a better position to fight for the playoff spot. We wanted to win all six matches so far, but the pitch is so strong and there are no easy matches out there. If we can continue this pace and win two out of three, I think we are in the playoffs and then we only need to win two! ”
Results for mixed doubles session seven: Australia 4-10 Norway; Switzerland 1-6 Sweden
