Union: UPM strike continues until March News
The strike has lasted five weeks and may continue for another three weeks.
The Paper Association announced on Friday that employees at UPM’s mill will continue their strike until March 12 if they cannot reach an agreement with the company on a new collective agreement before then.
The strike began on January 1, 2022. The union has been negotiating with UPM on the details of an agreement governing wages and conditions in the paper industry.
Follow a decision From the Helsinki District Court in January, UPM employees at certain power and water treatment plants had to return to work so that critical services such as district heating would not be affected by the strike.
Paper Union ready to negotiate
Traditionally, Finnish labor market negotiations have been sector-specific, and the collective agreement guarantees peace at work between trade unions and companies.
UPM’s representatives said that in this case it is preferable to negotiate on a company-by-company basis, as the businesses differ so much that an individual collective agreement would not apply.
After the meeting, Paperiliitto also announced on Friday that it was ready to negotiate with UPM on a company-by-company basis.
The association already has company-specific agreements with other forest industry giants Stora Enso and Metsä Group.
