The vote to approve America is competing, which includes my amendment
Dear friend,
This week, I voted in favor of the enactment of the Amending Law, the America Competing Law, which incorporates the changes I have proposed to eliminate overseas corruption and promotes manufacturing and supports innovative technological processes to modernize our economy. An estimated 120,000 MLGW customers without electricity due to the ice storm, so I’m following the situation closely and giving below tips and resources. I also spent a large part of my week in Washington discussing with experts the development of the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border, including hearings as Vice-Chair of the Helsinki Commission. I also promoted the American Music Fairness Act in a hearing with the Judicial Committee, which was attended by my friend Lawrence “Boo” of Mitchell Memphis Royal Studios; led an inspiring hearing this morning from my subcommittee on “Raise Every Voice and Sing” as a national anthem; expressed its concern at the recent denigration of civil rights monuments and called for support for my ongoing legislative efforts to protect them; and suggested guidelines for Covid-19 awareness and prevention as a health tip. Keep reading and follow me Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to see what I am doing when it happens.

Vote to pass the America Compete Act, which contains my amendments
Earlier today, I voted and Parliament passed the American Creation Opportunities for Manufacturing, Technological Privilege and Economic Strength (COMPETES) Act, which contains two changes I have proposed that will largely combat foreign kleptocracy and keep foreign communities afloat. A company operating in the United States is more responsible under U.S. law. The America COMPETES Act is a major effort to improve our country’s production capacity and invest in innovation. See my bulletin about the procedure here and my exemption from my amendments here.
Tracking the damage caused by an ice storm and providing clues about resources
MLGW reports more than 120,000 or more than 65 percent of customers without electricity this afternoon due to Thursday’s ice storm. I am monitoring the situation and I am in contact with the emergency center and other authorities. You can report interruptions by calling the MLGW automated number (901) 544-6500. To report an emergency such as a gas leak, call (901) 528-4465. The city of Memphis has opened a heating center at the Hickory Hill Community Center, 3910 Ridgeway Road. If you need transportation to get there, call the emergency center at (901) 297-1680. In any case, do your best to stay warm and safe.
Expresses its serious concern at the hearing of the Helsinki Commission on the mass measurement of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border and welcomed the forthcoming OSCE Chairman-in-Office;
Congressman Cohen at a hearing with the Helsinki Commission on Wednesday
On Wednesday, the Helsinki Commission, which served as my chairman, took note of Russia’s aggressive and provocative gathering of more than 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border for world peace. Expert witnesses gave a clear assessment of where to go and what Vladimir Putin might be planning. See my newsletter for my opening remarks, conversation with witnesses, and a brief concluding remark here.
On Thursday, the Helsinki Commission heard Zbigniew Rauta, the new President of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and we discussed the situation in Belarus, Ukraine and Poland. I look forward to working with the new chair. See my newsletter for that exchange here.
Interrogation of Royal Studios’ Boo Mitchell and other experts at the Legal Committee’s hearing on the American Music Fairness Act
As a proud Memphian and a supporter of the American Music Fairness Act, I was delighted to have Lawrence “Boo” of Mitchell’s legendary Royal Studios in Memphis testify as an expert witness at a bill hearing in the Judicial Committee on Wednesday. The American Music Fairness Act would restore the balance of the music industry by finally paying compensation to artists and other creative people who worked on the recording when their music is played on AM and FM radios. I support the adoption of the law and will continue to work to ensure that artists receive appropriate compensation for their work. Watch my release and my conversation with witnesses here.
As chair of a hearing on the history and significance of the song “Raise Every Voice and Sing”
This morning, I had the honor of chairing the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Liberties and Civil Liberties, which dealt deeply with the history and significance of the inspiring anthem “Raise Every Voice and Sing”. A song that promotes and emphasizes the important American values of freedom, equality, justice, and unity is proposed as a national anthem alongside the national anthem in legislation proposed by my friend House Majority Whip James Clyburn. See full consultation here and my release, including my opening remarks, here.
Calls for support for the Civil Rights Heritage Protection Act following the recent vandalism of the Jackie Robinson Memorial
I was shocked to read last weekend about another vandalism directed at the monuments to our civil rights history and its heroes – this time the birthplace of Jackie Robinson, the first black player in Major League Baseball. I re-enacted the Civil Rights Legacy Protection Act last February to address this issue after the Emmett Till Memorial was repeatedly desecrated outside of Money in Mississippi. See my publication on these events here.
Research grant for St. Judelle announced
On Monday, I announced that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive a grant from the National Institutes of Health for neurological research. See that publication here.

“Raise every voice and sing
Until the earth and the sky ring
Call with Liberty Harmonies
May our joy ascend as high as the listening heaven
Let it echo loudly like a rolling sea
Sing a song full of faith that the gloomy past has taught us
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us
Our new day has begun towards the rising sun
Continue until the victory is won. ”-“ Give every voice and sing, ”was proposed as the national anthem.
As always, I will stay.
sincerely,
Steve Cohen
