Suspects arrested after the “jackpotting” on an ATM in Bort-les-Orgues
A double wave of arrests was carried out in Lyon and Avignon this Thursday, as part of a wide-ranging investigation into ATM attacks across France. Those arrested are notably suspected of having stolen more than 25,000 euros from an ATM in Bort-les-Orgues in Corrèze, on the night of Monday to Tuesday. The following night, it was a device in Sainte-Florine, in Haute-Loire, which was emptied with the same technique: “jackpotting”, also used in dozens of other burglaries in recent months across the country.
From the first observations, the Corrèze gendarmes understood that they were confronted with seasoned thieves, because the technique used is very sophisticated. On the Banque Postale distributor in Bort-les-Orgues, they cut a slot with a grinder, on the facade, to access the wires of the automaton and connect it to a computer. Once connected, the thieves only had to enter a few lines of computer code to force the machine to release the notes.
The investigation designated to a section specializing in cybercrime
The police custody which started on Thursday could exceed 48 hours if the strip flight qualification is retained, which is plausible in view of the technicality of the flight, probably involving several people. The case is now in the hands of the Toulouse research section, which centralizes all the files potentially attributable to this band. The gendarmes work under the leadership of the J3 section of the Parquet de Paris, a section specializing in cybercrime.
