FC Bayern: Sarr trumpets from the Africa Cup of Nations
Munich – At least one of the two Africa Cup of Nations participants will definitely return to Munich from Yaound, very disappointed. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and hosts Cameroon were eliminated in the semi-finals 3-1 on penalties against Egypt for superstar Mohamed Salah (Liverpool FC).
Choupo-Moting started twice
The Bayern streamer stayed on the bench throughout the season, as he did in the quarter-finals against Gambia (2-0 to Cameroon). Before that, the 32-year-old had played twice in four games from the start and came in as a joker. Tamed by the pharaohs, the “Irresistible Lions” will play for third place on Saturday against Burkina Faso.
On the other hand, Bayern right-back Bouna Sarr is in the final with Senegal and meets Egypt on Sunday (8 p.m., Sportdigital and DAZN live).
Sarr has played all six games from the start so far, received good reviews, is considered a pillar in the team around superstar Sadio Man, also Liverpool.
But when the 30-year-old Sarr returns to Sbener Straße after a short vacation, a tough selection awaits him again.
Nagelsmann is looking forward to Sarr’s return
The appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations are “valuable for him because he doesn’t have that much playing time with us. That makes me happy. Obviously he trained and played better there than his competitors,” said Julian Nagelsmann.
The Bayern coach also said about Sarr, who came from Olympique Marseille in October 2020 for around eight million euros: “Let’s see if he can assert himself better after his return than was the case in his previous time at Bayern Munich .”
Bouna Sarr: Training and game performance must be right
Just 55 minutes of playing time in the Bundesliga says it all. Behind Benjamin Pavard and Josip Stanisic (back in team training after a two-month injury break), Sarr is only number three as a right-back.
Sarr was considered a candidate for sale or loan in every transfer period, but he would like to stay in Munich. Sarr’s perspective, whose contract runs until the summer of 2024, outlined Nagelsmann: “If the training performance and game performance is better than that of the competitors, there are coaches in the world who will not let you play.”
Bayern is already looking for a new right-back
But this was “de facto not the case” during his tenure. In January, AS Roma, FC Genoa, OSC Lille and Girondins Bordeaux were interested in a winter transfer, but the Sarr side blocked. “I will analyze my situation in June,” said the 30-year-old. It’s no secret: Bayern and Nagelsmann have long been looking for a new right-back who can act as an attacking rail player in a back three.
