Canada beat Switzerland to improve in Olympic mixed doubles curling
Canada’s Rachel Homan and John Morris set a 2-1 round robin record in mixed doubles curling at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics with a 7-5 win on Friday morning over Switzerland’s Jenny Perret and Martin Rios .
Morris, the reigning Olympic champion, and Homan split their two games to start Thursday’s tournament with a 6-4 loss to Great Britain and a 6-7 defeat of Norway.
Although Perret and Rios started with the hammer, Homan and Morris hit the scoreboard first, stealing three points early and never giving up the lead. The Swiss missed all five shots, Perrot’s last stone sailing heavily past a sea of red rocks.
Already up two in the fifth end, Canada added some security with a two. Switzerland called their power play in the sixth and Perret scored to take two points and halve the deficit.
Canada added a single in game seven and Switzerland (1-3) had a chance in game eight to score three equalizing points to force an extra end, but it shattered it for just one.
Homan shot at a sharp 78 percent pace while Morris hit a game-high 89 percent. Perret finished with 63 percent, Rios with 71 percent.
Morris teamed with Kaitlyn Lawes four years ago, defeating Rios and Perret in the gold medal match in Pyeongchang.
Canada will take on host team China in the following draw starting at 12:35pm ET.
Meanwhile, Italy continued to lead the table, improving to a 3-0 record with an 11-8 win over Norway (1-3), while Sweden (3-1) defeated Australia (0-4) with a 7-6 -Result defeated alone take second place in the table.
China, Great Britain and the Czech Republic (both 2-1) and the United States (1-2) remained inactive during the draw.
