Omicron: Challenge for companies – salzburg.ORF.at
Coronavirus
Around 20,000 Salzburg residents have currently tested positive for COV. More than 3,000 new infections within 24 hours were reported on Wednesday. This often poses major challenges for the economy with sick purchases.
Raw materials for the cement works in Grödig are obtained in the Leube lime works in Golling (Tennengau). Many sick leave of the 35 men would endanger the production. The owner, who will soon be retiring, finds out daily about the number of corona failures at the three Salzburg locations with 250 dollars.
There is a shortage of workers, overtime is increasing
As of Thursday, 30 employees were on sick leave, says the owner of Leube Baustoffe, Rudolf Zrost: “It’s unpleasant, because of course we have to fill this ten percent. Sometimes we can do that with temporary workers, sometimes not. Then we lack workers who then have to compensate others with overtime. This is a difficult and expensive situation.”
Imlauer: “Replacement staff on short-time work”
A look at the gastronomy – specifically the Imlauer Group with four hotels in the state capital. Georg Imlauer from the Imlauer Hotel Group has around 350 employees in all Salzburg operations: “In December and January we had around 25 employees who were in quarantine – at the moment there are four. We have a vaccination coverage rate of 95 percent in the company.”
However, one should currently consider that they are probably currently on short-time work, according to Imlauer: “We only have about 20 percent of the business that we normally have. That means we have a large part of our employees on short-time work, which we can activate at any time and immediately, and we can replace people who are in quarantine.”
Spar: “No problems at the moment”
In the food trade, Spar is one of the largest in Salzburg and also in Austria. Today, one percent of the workforce is missing due to Covid. Spar company spokeswoman Nicole Berkmann: “Spar employs a good 4,000 people in Salzburg. Not quite 50 are currently on sick leave due to Covid. Such a lower increase is not a problem. You don’t have to change anything there. Operations then continue as normal.” How things will continue overall and how the numbers will develop remains unclear, as has been the case for two years.
