chatillon architects in collaboration with thierry nabères architects (TNA) realized renovation historic municipal thermal baths in strasbourg, France. the project consists of the delicate renovation of an emblematic living and bathing space which opened its doors in 1908. the technical equipment has been renewed, destroyed or distorted the decorations have been restored and contemporary elements have been added to enhance the historic building and ensure safety and accessibility for visitors.
the thermal baths are located at the crossroads of the medieval city of strasbourg and neustadt, a district resulting from the extension of the city by the german empire from 1870 to 1918. located in the heart of the UNESCO perimeter, the work is classified as a historical monument since 2017. the building, revolutionary for its time, manages to combine concrete technique and architectural eclecticism, construction inspired by both antiquity and neo-regional. when it opened, the site offered a variety of facilities: indoor pools, public showers, sauna, solarium and even a dog grooming area.

to carry out this renovation project, the city of strasbourg, owner of the building, entrusted the SPL deux-rives, which selected the consortium led by eiffage construction alsace, in partnership with chatillon architectes (in know more here) who carried out the restoration and rehabilitation project for the indoor facility and iconic interiors, and TNA (read more here) for the construction of new aquatic and sports facilities.
the project includes the restoration and upgrading of the building, as well as its adaptation to new contemporary uses. the intervention had to meet several objectives: enhance the existing building, restore certain missing or altered elements and decorations, ensure the safety and accessibility of the building, renew all the technical equipment and design the contemporary facilities expected by the users of the building. this arrangement. in a word, to anchor it in our time without renouncing its character and its initial qualities. ‘it’s not a building that leaves you indifferent. when you come to visit, there is a very clear poetic relationship to space and light. he has a lot of charm. it is a construction of both ancient and neo-regional inspiration. this balance is fragile and must be preserved,’ says françois chatillon, founder of chatillon architectes.
