TSV 1860 beats Casino Salzburg in the Grünwalder Stadium
In the 1993/94 season, after unforgettable battles, Casino Salzburg reached the final of the UEFA Cup under the coaching legend Otto Baric. There, the Mozart city team lost out to Inter, but still caused one of the biggest surprises in Austrian football. Just a few months earlier, Casino Salzburg had been a guest on Grünwalder Strasse and had to admit defeat to TSV 1860 1-0.
Football in the city of Mozart
What a time those were when you didn’t have to associate Salzburg football with a drinks manufacturer from Fuschl. At that time, there was no need for a shower with wings to take off for sporting flights of fancy. The club was still called Austria (supplemented by a sponsor’s name) before it was taken over by Mateschitz & Co in 2005 and the history of the club was simply adapted.
The criticism fizzled out, what didn’t fit was made to fit… And in the city of Mozart Violet Austria was re-established and currently plays in the Regionalliga Salzburg.

But as I said: in 1992 the Salzburg football world was still in order and Otto Baric’s team was fighting for the championship in the Alpine Republic. At the end of the season, three teams were tied at the top of the table. Die Austria won the title, second was Salzburg, third was Swarovski Tirol with striker Peter Pacult.
During the winter break, Casino Salzburg also tested at TSV 1860 and brought players such as Wolfgang Feiersinger and Heribert Weber to Grünwalder Strasse.

At that time, the lions were in the 2nd Bundesliga South and had to go into the relegation round after the winter break. After place in the regular season, place 4 followed in the relegation round and finally relegation in the duels with TSV Havelse and Fortuna Köln.
In February 1992 it was still a dream of the future, the hope of staying up in the league was alive. When TSV 1860 welcomed Casino Salzburg in the Sixties Stadium 30 years ago and even defeated the top Austrian team, they firmly believed in staying up in the league. Horst Schmidbauer shot the lions to victory in the 43rd minute and made 2,500 spectators cheer.
