Comparing the deaths recorded in January this year with the same month in 2019 (12,925), when the pandemic arrived in Portugal – with the first in March -, this year 1,323 fewer people died.
January last year was the one with the most deaths in the last 13 years, with 19,652 months of deaths.
January of the last year of the month of the following month, the first four days prior to the maximum value recorded in each month of the same month in the last 13 years. As for the deaths considered “in excess” by the health authorities, in relation to what was expected, the SICO data show that this year there was excess mortality on more than half of the days of the month and that, in total, there were 411 deaths. too much.

Regarding the place of death, the majority (63.7%, 7394) died in a health institution, 2465 at home and 1669 nursed locally. In about 100 cases the place of death is unknown.
