Laboratory Engineer, DNA Sequencing and Genomics Laboratory, BIDGEN position at the UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI
The HiLIFE – Institute of Biotechnology (BI) in Viikki Science Park is a research institute of the University of Helsinki. The institute has ~ 35 research groups and 250 researchers and operates at the highest international level. More information about the institute can be found at https://www.helsinki.fi/hilife-biotekniikan instituutti.
Laboratory of DNA Sequencing and Genomics (BIDGEN) (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/dna-sekvensointi-ja-genomiikka) was established in 2008 by combining DNA sequencing (established in 1990) and DNA microarray arrays (established in 2000). BIDGEN operates as a core unit providing many services in the field of genomics and related bioinformatics. We use sequencing methods from the Sanger method to high-throughput Illumina machines and to sequencing individual molecules. We have several Illumina machines in the laboratory (iSeq, MiSeq, Next Seq500) and we share the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 with FIMM. Single molecule sequencing is performed with PacBio Sequel 2 and Minion. Projects range from individual PCR fragments to population size sequencing of large eukaryotic genomes. We also perform single cell sequencing of samples from mouse to yeast using the 10x Genomics machinery. Our projects range from small viruses to microbes and large eukaryotic genomes (animals, plants, fungi). For these samples, we perform the de Novo genome project and RNAseq analysis. We have performed direct RNA sequencing using MinION technology. Another view is population-level genomics projects. We study microbial populations using an amplicon approach such as 16S or ITS sequencing as well as metagenomics and metatranscriptomics. Currently, we also use human samples on long-distance readers. We also perform COVID genome sequencing by participating in the genotyping of local samples. Most of our customers are from Finnish universities and research units, such as LUKE, but companies also use our services.
