It is the worst result of the CDS in democracy: Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos’ party failed to elect a deputy for the next legislature and lost the five mandates it had in the Assembly of the Republic.
The party’s president, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, always said that it aimed to strengthen its presence in parliament and valued polls that pointed to a result below the marked historical milestones. “We are immune. Wait for the polls and we will respond,” Rodrigues dos Santos said on Monday.

The best result that the CDS had in democracy was in 1980, when the centrist bench reached 46 deputies. Far from these values, in the last legislative sessions, the number of deputies has been decreasing since 2011.
Paulo Portas, leader of the party, said goodbye to the CDS in 2016. He was followed by the Assunção of the historic Cristas, who reached the position of president of the 2020 party, at which time Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos took over the direction.
