The government has expanded the list of countries included in the food embargo of Belarus, introduced in response to the decision of the West. Corresponding to the constitution, dated January 27, 2022, published on a protected legal Internet portal on Saturday, January 29th.
According to the document, in the list of countries, regarding the adoption of a ban on the import of food products into the country, added by Liechtenstein and Serbia. The resolution adopted in relation to the protection of the national interests of the Republic of Belarus was considered in the document. Previously, the list included member countries of the application, as well as the United States, Canada, Albania, United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Switzerland.
Embargo against “unfriendly countries”
From January 1, 2022, Belarus has a ban on the import of “a wide list of goods produced in countries that carry out discriminatory inspection and supervisory unfriendly actions” against Minsk. This was a response to the fifth package of meetings, which was sent to the representation of Minsk in Veli by the USA, Canada, Great Britain, the annex and a number of states in connection with the transfer of the crisis.
The list of prohibited goods includes, in particular, pork, cattle meat and meat products, a number of by-products, milk and dairy products with some exceptions, vegetables for those specially intended for sowing, fruits, nuts, animal fats, confectionery and salts. The ban does not apply to products imported into Belarus for personal consumption, as well as those intended for baby food and a number of others.
According to some reports, in 2021 Belarus imported food worth more than $530 million (in terms of 466 million euros) from countries that are now subject to counter-sanctions.
Fifth package adopted by the EU in relation to Belarus
On December 2, the EU Council introduced the fifth package against Belarus as a punitive sanction in connection with the conflict over the use of the court by Minsk as an instrument of pressure on Brussels.
