Portugal recommended Venezuela to collaborate with the UN Fact-Checking Mission — DNOTICIAS.PT
Portugal recommended today to the Venezuelan Government that it collaborates with the Independent International Fact-Checking Mission on Venezuela, which assesses alleged human rights violations in the country.
“They register with the identification of Venezuela as recognition of the Verification Mission and of Venezuela with the representation of Portugal of a message released on video on the occasion of the Examination of Human Rights to Venezuela”
Portugal started by giving itself to Venezuela, wishing it “much success” in the EPU, but highlighting itself regretting that “the environmental and human rights situation” that “has worsened” since the previous examination.
“We are pleased to see that (Venezuela) has renewed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Office of the High Commissioner (Michelle Bachelet) and we recommend that they strengthen this cooperation and also that they take concrete measures to restore the independence of the ‘judicature’ (judicial power) and ensure accountability for human rights violations”, was heard in the message, simultaneously in Spanish.
Portugal also asked the Caracas executive to “continue to release political prisoners” and to “create an environment conducive to political opposition, human rights defenders and journalists”.
“End all acts of torture and sexual and gender-based violence against detainees and ratify the optional protocol of the Convention against Torture (CAT)”, were sometimes made by Portugal to Venezuela.
The Universal Periodic Reviews analyze the situation of human rights in the member countries of the United Nations.
The Venezuelan State was selected in the first and second EPU cycles in 2011 and 2016.
