Wrong cops were out of luck – region
ST. GALLEN – The St. Gallen canton police have received twelve reports of calls from alleged police officers since Wednesday. The calls involved the «fake police officer» scam. In one case, a person collecting the car was arrested, the St. Gallen canton police announced on Thursday.
Spread across the entire canton, the St. Gallen cantonal police received twelve reports within 24 hours that they had called “false policemen”. On the phone, the perpetrators pretend to be police officers and fool the alleged victims into believing that burglars are allegedly after their money and jewelry.
68-year-old outwits scammers
According to the reporting fields in none of the twelve reported cases, mostly retired citizens die as a result of the fraud. In one case, a 68-year-old man who knew the scam managed to alert the police in good time. “That is why the St. Gallen canton police and the St. Gallen city police managed to arrest a 24-year-old Swiss man in the area of Bruggwaldstrasse. This had appeared at the place of residence of the potential victim on behalf of the ‘fake policemen’ and wanted to pick up the valuables, ”writes the canton police.
Further investigations into the masterminds would refer to the St. Gallen canton police.
