A couple living in the Yvelines department was arrested and indicted in Caen this Sunday. They are suspected of having stolen more than 64,000 liters of fuel in service stations in the region. This is a still provisional assessment since the investigators continue their investigations. The damage is already assessed at 88,000 euros.
It all started in a Carrefour store in Calvados
Between November 8 and December 17, 2021, a Carrefour supermarket in Calvados noticed a diversion of 8,000 liters of gasoline. The investigators of the departmental security of Calvados mount a monitoring device and on January 7, 2022, they arrested two people. “They corresponding, explains Amélie Cladière, public prosecutor of Caen, to the video surveillance recordings of the signs“. He is a 33-year-old man and his 29-year-old company, domiciled in the Yvelines department. The searches allow the discovery of 9,600 euros in cash, as several sets of license plates, pumps and cans for diesel.
Stolen bank cards and fake license plates
Amélie Cladière explains that their scam was based on “the use of stolen bank cards but also a _technical device allowing the use of diesel or gasoline in very large quantities while paying only a small amount_.“The vehicles used during the trips were provided with false plates. The suspects acted in the Calvados, but also in Eure, Seine-Maritime and Yvelines. All the procedures are grouped together at the Parquet de Caen where the investigation started.
Organized gang fraud instruction
The two people referred were indicted on Sunday evening. A warrant of committal was issued against the man, already known to the police and the courts. The woman asked for a delay to present an alternative to incarceration and was placed in detention pending. The investigations will continue on the rogatory commission of the judge, as part of the investigation for fraud in an organized gang.
