The map by the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) released this Thursday shows that all regions of Portugal – including the Azores and Madeira – are painted red, therefore taken in extreme risk.
Portugal and Madeira remain in the same category as last week (the most serious), while the Azores move from orange to red, already in the highest risk parameter.

Red is also the predominant color in southern Europe. All regions of countries such as Spain, France, Greece, Cyprus and Italy (with the exception of Sardinia) are currently at extreme risk. In addition, territories such as the Netherlands (which decreed a general confinement in December), Ireland and Belgium are also painted red.
In central Europe, the pandemic situation has slightly improved: most regions in countries such as Germany, Austria, Hungary or Poland are now painted orange, after being months in the lot of territories at maximum risk. Still, in this region of the continent, a red is still in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Regarding northern Europe, the red is also a dominant color – only some regions of Sweden and Norway are painted orange.
In the less serious categories – painted yellow and green – are only some regions of Romania, which, in light of this map, has a pandemic most under control in Europe.
ECDC’s map combines Covid-19 case notification rates over the past 14 days, number of tests performed and total positives, and updated weekly on Thursday to assist Member States on restrictions to be applied to travel within the community space.
This map by the European agency follows a system of traffic lights on the spread of Covid-19 in the EU, starting with green (favorable situation), passing through orange and red (very dangerous situation), helping member states on restrictions to be applied to travel within the community space.
