Finland: The architect ‘s transient lake art winter tradition Arts and entertainment
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK – In southern Finland, an architect-designer has returned to a frozen lake with a snow shovel to draw a large animal on ice for the sixth year in a row, creating a work of art he hopes will “make people happy and encouraging.” they go hiking in beautiful nature. “
On December 4, Pasi Widgren drew a fox about 295 meters north of Pitkajärvi in Helsinki. In previous years, he drew a bear and an owl with a shovel and always used the same lake as a cloth.
Widgren has drawn animals for local lakes every winter since 2016 near his home in a village near Lahti, with a population of 120,000. The drawings disappear when there is more snow or when the ice melts.
The idea for short-term art came “suddenly a couple of years ago when I realized I might have a special coordinating ability to do things like this myself,” the 40-year-old said.
After arriving in Pitkajärvi this month, he tested the thickness of the rock to make sure it was dense enough for walking and working. It was 4-6 inches thick.
“Of course I had ice sheets with me around my neck,” in case the ice cracked and he had to save himself, Widgren said.
“Then I sketched the outline of the character by walking and thinking about it at the same time in my own image of the fox and then I started to ‘draw’ using [the] snow shovel, “he explained.
Four hours later, Widgren was ready.
“I walked to the top of the cliffs, about 150 feet above the lake,” to watch the end result, drank coffee from my thermos, and took pictures and videos to commemorate this. “
The fox was less visible on Monday because it was raining a little, Widgren said.
“It’s also very important to me that making this kind of art leaves nothing to be desired [marks] to nature, “he said.
