Christmas: S. Egidio Genoa, lunch in the Basilica for 220 ‘last’ – Liguria

Archbishop Tasca, serve those in need. Bucci, message of hope

(ANSA) – GENOA, DEC 25 – “This is an important thing for us, for you and for all of Genoa, a city that wants to be welcoming and that wants to do everything possible for those who come here. But together with the message of peace I want to give also a message of hope for a better year “. This was stated by the mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci present at the Christmas lunch organized, as every year, by the Community of Sant’Egidio who today has put at the table, in the central nave of the Basilica of the Annunziata, 220 homeless people, elderly people alone and refugees. “Genoa has always pulled up its sleeves – said Bucci – to always do something better”.

The traditional Christmas lunch dedicated to the ‘last’, preceded by the words and prayer of Msgr. Tasca, bishop of Genoa, is only the latest, in chronological order, the great commitment of over 1500 volunteers of Sant’Egidio who in recent days have delivered hot Christmas meals to over 14 thousand people, organized 40 ‘gift festivals’ in all the districts of the city, visitors 1,200 inmates in Ligurian prisons to whom comfort items were donated. “The Christmas lunch – said Sergio Casali, spokesman for S.Egidio Genova – is the culmination of our business but also a starting point for rebuilding bonds worn out by two difficult years. The starting point is to counteract the isolation of many people because a city made up of isolated people is a more fragile city, more open to anger and disillusionment. We want to build bonds of friendship and solidarity and the future of this city, fight against despair and loneliness “(ANSA).
