Statistics Norway: Oslo is Norway’s most expensive city to rent housing – students despair
The price for renting a vacancy in Oslo and Bærum was NOK 12,310 per month in 2021. This is 29 percent above the national average, writes Statistics Norway. In Bergen and Trondheim, the average price for a two-room home was NOK 9,510 and NOK 9,780 in 2021, respectively.
– This year’s figures from Statistics Norway now show that 73 per cent of student support goes to renting housing and that there is even more in Oslo, says leader Tuva Todnem Lund in the Norwegian Student Organization (NSO) to NTB.
According to NSO, 85 percent of Norwegian students rent in the private rental market. With an annual student grant from Lånekassen of 126,000, most of this goes directly to rent.
– You do not need financial education to see that student support must be increased and more housing must be built via the Student Associations, says the NSO leader and emphasizes the requirement that support for Norwegian students should be 1.3 times the basic amount in the National Insurance and thus up to about 30,000 NOK.
The figures from Statistics Norway also show that there are large differences within the cities over the cheapest and most expensive. In Bergen alone, it is estimated that the rental price varies by around 13 per cent from the most expensive in the central Bergenhus area and to the other districts. Oslo also sees such an impact between the districts.
