Port of Lisbon announces 123.8 million agreement to modernize Alcântara terminal | Lisbon
The Administration of the Port of Lisbon (APL) and Liscont signed an amendment to the concession of the Alcântara Container Terminal, which provides for an investment plan of 123.8 million euros, announced an APL on Monday.
This investment plan foresees the “modernization and increase of the operational efficiency of the Alcântara terminal”, considered crucial “to keep away from the port of Lisbon”, highlighted the public capital company, in a note.
According to APL, it will also allow for the safety of the terminal and the environmental sustainability of operations, to improve, namely, “a strong reduction in CO2 exemption [dióxido de carbono] in its operation”.
Quoted in the note, José Castel-Branco, member of the Board of Directors of APL, explained that this reduction will be possible due to the “acquisition of new, more efficient and less polluting electrical equipment”.
On the other hand, there will also be a “transfer of cargo movement from road to rail and river modes, allowing for greater fluidity of operations,” he added.
The Alcântara Terminal is one of the main port infrastructures for import and export in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
The amendment now disclosed was made possible following the publication of a decree-law that authorizes amendments to the bases of the concession contract for the right to operate the Alcântara Container Terminal.
